The northern toe of this mesa appears to contact and possibly overlie a rift in the lava crust, giving the impression that the mesa is geologically younger. However, the mesa surface is a jumble of tilted and disrupted blocks, while the lava is smooth and intact, which suggests that the mesa existed (and was deformed) before the lava.
