Nicholson Crater

Nicholson Crater

The Riddle of Nicholson
Do the layers visible in a 2012 HiRISE image lap onto the crater floor, as predicted by the mounds-grow-as-mounds hypothesis? Or, do the layers parallel the floor, as expected if Nicholson Crater was filled with sediment and then the moat was scooped out later? The central peak of this crater is surrounded by a layered deposit that rises 4 kilometers above the crater floor. Nicholson is 102 kilometers in diameter.
