It has been considered by scientists that chaotic terrain could have been created by magmatic processes and that small cinder cones on Mars, like these in Baetis Chaos, could be the cause of those processes. Heat from these different activities could have melted the subsurface ice that released vast amounts of water creating chaotic terrain.
