This region marks a transition from the smooth to hummocky surface typical of the Arsia Mons western summit to a collapsed terrain. The formation of the collapsed terrain appears to represent some of the youngest activity on the western flank and understanding the formation of these two units is critical for interpreting the developmental sequence of the shield.
