Scalloped depressions in Utopia Planitia are thought to be the result of subsurface ice sublimation. They are also known to bear polygonal-patterned ground. Our image can help us better to understand the relationship between these polygons and the geology of the substrate to assess their mode of formation, which may be water-related.
