Clay-Basement Contact Exposed in Nirgal Vallis

Clay-Basement Contact Exposed in Nirgal Vallis

Clay Contact in Nirgal Vallis
A CaSSIS image shows what may be breccias at the base of a clay-bearing unit exposed in Nirgal Vallis. Breccia are rocks of angular fragments cemented together, and are pretty small at CaSSIS resolution, so we can take a closer look. There are also diverse compositions exposed here. (CaSSIS, Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System, is an instrument on the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter.)
